The CEPR condemns the murder of Italian activist in Gaza

The Council for European Palestinian Relations (CEPR) condemns in the strongest terms the outrageous murder of Italian peace activist Vittorio Arrigon. This is a terrible tragedy for his family and an affront to the people of Gaza.

This horrific act of brutality could not be more sharply contrasted with the humanitarian work of Vittorio Arrigoni and his longstanding struggle against the illegal siege on Gaza and to bring relief to the territory's people.

The illegal five-year siege of Gaza can only fan the flames of extremism. Poverty, deprivation and a lack of hope are the perfect recruiting sergeants for extremism. The best tribute to Vittorio Arrigon would be the lifting of the Siege on Gaza.

Speaking today (April 15, 2011) CEPR's director, Dr Arafat Shoukri said:

"This murder is an outrage. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family of Vittorio Arrigoni, a man that struggled in solidarity for peace and justice for the Palestinian people. It is an affront to Palestinian customs of hospitality.

"Only Israel could benefit from such a horrific crime, as other peace activists and solidarity campaigners are deterred from coming to Gaza and showing their valuable and deeply respected support."
